The Supreme Court has struck down the federal eviction moratorium. Now 11 million people are imminently at risk of losing their homes. We need to fight back!
The Supreme Court ruling is truly disgusting. The majority opinion stated, “Preventing landlords from evicting tenants who breach their leases intrudes on one of the most fundamental elements of property ownership—the right to exclude.” The court expressed their fear that if the moratorium was allowed to stand then the next thing you know the government could also decide to mandate, “free grocery delivery to the homes of the sick or vulnerable.” The Supreme Court is a tool for the rich and powerful to oppress the working class.
But regardless of this ruling, Congress has the authority and resources to end the eviction crisis completely. Congress must return to session now, enact an indefinite nationwide eviction moratorium, and cancel the rents. It is the government’s failure to manage the COVID outbreak that caused this unprecedented housing crisis. The government funds the Pentagon to the tune of $750 billion a year, using just 10% of the money would cover all the unpaid rents.
